Cercacor is introducing to the U.S. cycling community Ember™ Sport – the world’s first non-invasive hemoglobin tracker for endurance athletes – at Interbike 2016 in Las Vegas, September 21-23, at booth # 11255. Wireless, smaller than a smartphone and using light, Ember measures hemoglobin and pulse rate in as fast as 30 seconds without needles, a blood draw or need for a lab. This is much faster than Ember’s original 90-second test time when it was first introduced.
Hemoglobin carries oxygen to muscles and can boost endurance. When hemoglobin levels are lower than normal, the heart and lungs must work harder to compensate – thus diminishing performance. By determining and tracking hemoglobin levels, athletes can begin to understand how this measurement may change due to training intensity, hydration, recovery times, diet and elevation.
How Ember Works:
Athletes download the Ember app to their smartphone or tablet, which then connects to the Ember device via Bluetooth. Athletes use the app to view, build a historic record, and segment and track their collective data. Using Ember’s app, they can instantly share one measurement or entire data files with their coaches, fellow athletes or friends by email, SMS and social media. If the user enables location services, each measurement also includes location, elevation and weather conditions at the time it was taken.

Detect signs of potential overtraining:
After exhaustive workouts, athletes’ first-of-day hemoglobin measurements are typically lower and heart rate is typically higher. When this happens, athletes and their coaches may wish to adjust the next workout accordingly to help avoid overtraining (and resulting setbacks).
Optimize elevation / altitude training:
Users may also see the impact higher elevation has on their hemoglobin. Ember may help athletes optimize their elevation training to measure how their hemoglobin increases, when it peaks, and how long it stays elevated after leaving altitude to help them time elevation training around their competitions.
Obtain pulse-rate measurements:
Ember’s pulse rate measurements are based on the same Signal Extraction Technology® (SET®) it licenses from Masimo Corporation (NASDAQ: MASI), which is used in hospitals worldwide.
